Frequently asked questions and guidance for using Shiori Diary with confidence.
Where is my diary data stored?
Your diary data is stored on your device. Diary text and media are not sent to a developer server. See the privacy policy for maps, optional weather and backups to an external destination you choose.
Can I use the app without camera, microphone, or location access?
Yes. You can save text entries without those permissions. Each permission is only needed for its related optional feature.
How do I change permissions?
Open the iPhone Settings app, select Shiori Diary, and change access for Camera, Microphone, Speech Recognition, Location, or Photos.
Can I avoid saving recorded audio?
Turn off “Keep audio” on the entry toolbar or “Save audio in diary” in Settings. This setting controls voice notes, not sound included in videos. Your voice can still be used for transcription without attaching the recording to the entry.
Are the main diary features free?
Yes. Writing, photos, audio, location, calendar, map, and search remain free. Shiori Plus is optional and adds reminders, backup, PDF export, and deeper reflections.
Will the app show ads?
Released version 1.3 has no ads. A future ad-supported update is planned to show banners to free users. Existing Feature Pack owners and active monthly or annual subscribers will remain ad-free. If you already purchased, use Restore Purchases in the app’s Settings.
How do I restore a purchase?
Open Settings, choose Shiori Plus, and tap “Restore Purchases.” Make sure the iPhone is signed in with the same Apple Account used for the purchase.
How do I cancel a subscription?
Open iPhone Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Canceling does not delete your diary; saved entries remain available through the free features.
How do backup and restore work?
Shiori Diary creates a local backup file containing your entries, photos, videos, audio, locations, weather, daily notes, categories, and settings. Store it somewhere you trust. Restore merges entries and skips duplicates.
How do I delete all data?
Use the data deletion option in the app’s Settings. Photos already copied to the Photos app must be deleted separately.
How do I add photos and videos?
In version 1.3, open Camera and choose Take Photo. Tap the shutter for a photo or hold it for a video with sound, up to one minute. Switch between front and rear cameras as needed. Attach up to 10 photos and 3 videos, or select them from your library. Trim videos longer than a minute before importing. Tap thumbnails to expand or play media within the diary.
Where did AUTO go?
Version 1.3 removes capture-on-post. Use the shutter explicitly. In Settings → Photos, videos and audio, choose whether the camera preview appears at launch. Opening the preview does not capture media. AUTO remains available in the older version 1.2.
Can I reduce video storage?
Choose one of five video quality levels, from ultra-low to highest, in recording settings. This affects future recordings and imports, not existing videos. Video audio transcription uses on-device speech recognition on supported devices; noise or unsupported speech may prevent recognition.
Why is weather missing?
Enable automatic weather to use Apple Weather for the selected place or your permitted current location. Entries still save without weather if location or connectivity is unavailable. New mood selection is removed in 1.3; past mood records remain.
